Jaded has been a characteristic of Liam's personality since he was young. He never felt as though he was able to live his childhood, and that was part of the resentment he held in his heart. Having had his father taken away at an early age, and being mocked and scorned for the decisions he had nothing to do with, made him a young man with a vast amount of hate in his heart. He took his anger, frustration and rage to a dark place, where it manifested and festered to the point where Liam's cold heart turned black.

He's spent the better part of nine centuries alone, and has no one to blame for his loneliness but himself. His calculating, cold heart makes it all but impossible to curry favor with him, his affections are so fragile they can turn at any moment.

He find that people are easy to manipulate, easy to control, and his sense of wonder is never at ease when seeing how far he can push someone before they break. He enjoys this form of torture, both mental and physical, choosing only to end a life when he feels that it has served his amusement, or functionality.

The epitome of evil, Liam has no compunction whatsoever in manipulating anyone and anything to get what he wants, when he wants it – be it sex, money, blood, power – it doesn’t matter to him. His longevity as a vampire has taught him how not to get caught, how to maneuver in a world full of people who are out to destroy that which he has made.

His jealousy knows no bounds, and he would rather kill that which he loves (as much as a dark soul can love) rather than give in and see their happiness come to fruition. He is not one that believes in the concept that as long as you're happy I'm happy. He believes that as long as he's happy, he could care less if anyone else is happy.

Of course, Liam has no concept of what true happiness is, and if he'd ever had it as a human, he's long since forgotten it now. To Liam, there is nothing like the enchantment of blood letting, the thrill of fear, the high of playing god.

Born to a poor family in Arundel, West Sussex, Liam Edric Cromwell was the youngest and only son of Sabine FitzRoger (the illegitimate daughter of Roger de Montgomery, First Earl of Arundel) and Edric Cromwell, a mason. When he was born, he looked every bit the part of the Montgomery family, with villagers suspecting that the Earl was the boys father, and not Edric.

Liam never knew his father. He was killed in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the year Liam was born. Hearing the stories of how all able bodied men were called up to fight the Normans, Liam resented the Earl, blaming him for his father's death. And while he took on the job of mason as his father did, he worked hard to learn to fight so that one day he could avenge the death of a man he never knew.

And that deep desire for revenge is what drew Liam to his fate on the eve following his 30th birthday. His young wife, Arabella, having died in child birth along with his son who was still born, Liam clung to the passion of revenge, hardening his heart and making his singular goal the death and ruin of the First Earl of Arundel. Little did he know that his passion for revenge would be the gateway to his new life, and give him the tools to exact his revenge.

Draga, a young gypsy woman new to the people of light (the English), came to Liam one night in a noisy tavern, drawn to the handsome young man by the scent of him, raw and ripe for the taking. Draga was a Upyri, the undead, a child of dark. During Liam's natural life, the concept of the undead or night walkers was hardly even legend yet, for the Upyri were very skilled at keeping their identities secret. It was not until they started making more, using the people of the west to increase their ranks did the Upyri, finally come into western legend. Where they finally became the stuff of nightmares.

The night Liam met Draga, was the last night Liam would have a human. Draga was beautiful, with a pale olive complexion and onyx eyes that seemed endless. His broken heart and broken spirit seemed to charm the young woman, and she bought him ale after ale, sidling up to him wooing him with her mystery.

He conveyed his tale of woe, how his father had been taken from him, leaving his mother to beg from the Earl who wired her, as they were left with nothing. How Liam was apprenticed to the master builder in exchange for his sister being one of the Earl's courtiers, a mistress. How Liam swore that somehow, this man was responsible for cursing his family, and therefore the death of his beloved Arabella. How he vowed revenge. All of this he told to Draga, who used his desire and twisted it, making her seem sympathetic and making her appear his savior, for she had a way to accomplish all that Liam desired. She gained his trust, and she leads him to his doom.

The very person who Liam thought robbed him of the life he should have had was the first victim of a brand new member of the Upyri, a vampire, who in death looked more like the heir to the Earl's estates than his own son, and that is how Liam amassed his wealth, killing the father, and the son, and taking what he thought was his rightful place as Earl of Arundel.

That was 943 years ago, and Draga, so far as Liam knows, is long since dead. He is one of the oldest living Vampires, a statement that always makes Liam chuckle, for he is anything but alive.

Having spent much of his life alone, keeping to himself, killing where he needed, and absorbing wealth where he could, he used the wealth of the estate he now called his own, and was free to travel by night to all the places in the world, living the life of a gypsy, staying in the shadows, becoming a myth. Until he landed in the New World, finding the city of New Orleans a place that appealed to the opulence of his old world tastes and his lust for modernization.

It was there in, 1809, that Liam first laid eyes on Bastian Devlin, and it was then that Liam had decided he'd lived alone long enough.
